In many cultures s kiss is recognized by others as a sign of affection or greeting. The physical location of the kiss is often what determines the nature of the kiss. For example, when it’s placed on the lips that’s an identifying sign of love, intimacy and passion.
In cultures where it is the norm for a greeting, the kiss is placed on the hands or both sides of the cheek. This is commonly done in many Middle Eastern countries.
Why the kiss of death
A representation of a friend kissing another. A kiss denotes a sense of loyalty to a friend. Although, we know of the negative side which is when the motive is betrayal.
No doubt, an ulterior motive is the negative side of a kiss. Judas had a sinister motive. He was about to betray his master into the hands of his enemies with a kiss.
Why a kiss you may ask? Surely, it’s a sign of friendship. A gesture of comradery. Most definitely it is! So when its used otherwise, that’s the reason why it is the ultimate sign of betrayal.
Consider that he was one of the twelve disciples. He was chosen by Jesus to be one with them. A brotherhood living in love and unity. They lived in a spirit of friendship and community (Mat. 10:1-4; Mk. 3:13-19). He saw Jesus doing only good works.
Listen to what he said concerning the costly oil that Mary used to anoint Jesus’ feet. “Why was the oil not sold and the money given to the poor? It would have easily brought three hundred silver pieces.” He said it not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of their common funds (Jn. 12:3; Jn. 12:4-6).
So what was his reason? Maybe he did not realize the dire consequences of his action. However, he was very furtive in his actions. He conferred with the authorities. And he made the plans secretly with them to betray Jesus. billygraham.org
It has been the acceptable norm in the Middle Eastern culture where Jesus grew up to greet each other with a kiss. Jesus even remarked on this practice. It happened when he was invited to the house of a religious leader. And was criticized for interacting with a lady of questionable character. Jesus said, “You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet” (Lk. 7:36-45).
However, Jesus’ death was prophesized. Jesus was sent as savior of the world. “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world” (1 Jn. 4:14). Also “he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 Jn. 2:2). Therefore, it had to happen, since he had to die to save mankind.
How it would happen was the unknown. But on the third day he was to rise from the dead. He was to be the first fruits from the dead (1 Cor. 15:20-22). And guarantee the resurrection of all those who put their faith and trust in him. This is symbolic language depicting the surety of the believer’s resurrection. Because the first fruit is a sign that the harvest has begun and many more crops are expected. EASTER! 5 ASTONISHING STUPENDOUS: KNOW HOW TO?
